Poster Analysis

Prometheus

The Prometheus poster is a very mysterious poster, this is due to the massive obscure head which looks human but has a unhuman look to it. There is also a lot of smoke around the main character which suggests this person is going into a place where they cannot make out what is going to happen to the character or where they are going. we can tell by what the character is wearing, a spacesuit, that they are on another planet and the film is going to be a science fiction film.
the tagline is very eerie and suggests that the characters may not survive the film. It could also suggest that whatever they are searching for might not be worth looking for.
The font of the film is the same font as all of the Alien Franchise. The poster does not say anywhere that it is related to the franchise however by having the font and the director being Ridley Scott we can tell that the poster is for a film in the Alien universe.
The colouring on the poster has a blue tint. blue is commonly associated with being isolated and cerebral. this suggests that whatever the huge head is or whatever the villain in the film is, they are not going to have much emotion but be very smart.
the website link gives viewers more to discover about the film.
The name Prometheus is from the greek god by the same name, he gave fire to the humans and was then punished by zeus to be chained to a rock and had a eagle to eat its liver. this could suggest that a character in the film is smarter than mankind and is punished for giving too much to the humans.

Captain Phillips
From the poster we can tell that this film is based on a true story. For lots of people knowing a film is based on true events is a huge factor for them wanting to go and see the film. the two characters climbing up the side of a ship with guns we can assume are pirates as they have pulled up to the big boat with little boat and are holding guns and climbing up a rope not a official ladder.  having the two characters hold guns suggests that there is going to be a bit of violence. we can tell the film is set on a boat as it is called Captain Phillips and the poster is of a boat. This implies that whoever is getting boarded is not going to be able to run anywhere as they will be trapped on a boat. This makes the audience excited as just from the poster they know that there is going to be trouble.
Having Tom Hanks in the film is a massive selling point. Almost everyone will have seen a film with Tom Hanks in so they can see that this film has tom hanks and want to see it because Tom Hanks is in it.
The poster has at the very top “from the director of The Bourne Ultimatum” this can also sell some viewers as they will go and watch the Bourne ultimatum want to see Captain Phillips purely because they thought the person who directed The Bourne Ultimatum was a good director.
The tagline is very gritty and suggests that the sea is not as safe as you might think. Saying survival is everything suggests the story is going to dangerous and smart as if the characters are going to survive they must be smart enough to adapt.
The production company is right underneath the title, Columbia pictures are a huge production company so having them near the top is essential as the film is not from a franchise or from the poster it is not a superhero film. This means that one of the biggest selling points has to be the production company.

The age rating, release date, website, and distribution company are all at the bottom of the poster. this is because you look from top to bottom so having the date of release at the bottom sticks in the viewer's head and stays with them longer as it is the last thing they looked at.
